ANR FOUNDATION MENTIONED 37 TIMES IN NEW SURGEON GENERAL'S REPORT

We were pleased with the recent release of the 2024 Surgeon General’s Report, “Eliminating Tobacco-Related Disease and Death: Addressing Disparities,” which provides valuable information to support smokefree air and tobacco prevention education and policy advocacy work at the local and state level. ANR Foundation is heavily cited throughout the report (see pages 548-560), and pages 551-552 feature several of our maps, created to show the progression of laws over time.

NOTE: A special edition Virtual Clearing the Air® webinar titled "2024 Surgeon General's Report Explained" will occur this Wednesday, December 18, with special guest Michael Tynan of CDC OSH. If you would like to attend read more and register here.

PENNSYLVANIA

Special thanks to Grid Magazine in Philadelphia for their excellent coverage of the fight for smokefree casinos in Pennsylvania. Jen Rubolino of CEASE PA is quoted as is Bronson Frick, ANR's Director of Advocacy.

KANSAS - MISSOURI

Casino workers and advocates in Kansas and Missouri, led by Joe Hafley from Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects (CEASE), are pushing hard for smokefree legislation. ANR has been at the forefront of this fight, providing the tools, resources, and expertise to make sure workers’ voices are heard across the country.

NEW JERSEY

CEASE NJ held a protest outside the New Jersey League of Municipalities conference in November, calling on Governor Phil Murphy and New Jersey lawmakers to take immediate action to close the casino smoking loophole and protect the health of casino workers.

2024 CLEARING THE AIR® AWARDS

In October 2024, ANR Foundation presented 14 awards across six categories to individuals, organizations, and businesses for exceptional community organizing, political campaigns, and stellar research all leading toward achieving its goal to protect everyone from exposure to secondhand smoke.

ANR Urges Legislators to Push for 100% Smokefree Casinos

Last week, The National Council of Legislators from Gaming States (NCLGS) Winter Meeting was held at Caesars New Orleans and ANR was there, urging legislators to see how the thriving New Orleans economy squarely refutes the industry scare tactics about what will happen if the casino smoking loophole is closed.

👍THUMBS UP to Oakland, CA for passage of a smokefree bar patio law that will protect the health of all bar workers at over 30 venues across the city.

👍THUMBS UP to Vallejo, CA for adoption of a more restrictive Tobacco Retailer License which will mean less kids hooked on tobacco.

👍THUMBS UP to LGBTQ Minus Tobacco and all the supportive coalition members who helped advocate for these new policies in the Bay Area.

👎THUMBS DOWN to smoke-filled Hard Rock Hotel & Casino opening in Bristol, VA. It’s unacceptable that in the birthplace of country music, musicians might have to still worry about playing shows while being exposed to secondhand smoke. Read more

👎THUMBS DOWN to Oakland for exempting the smoking and vaping of cannabis from the city’s otherwise strong smokefree multi-unit housing law.
